The Elusive Isle

Maui's good for nice beaches, lots of resorts, and plenty to do. If you want to see some big surf, Pearl harbor, and a lot of people check out Oahu. If you're looking for rivers, waterfalls and hiking trails you need to go to Kauai. Want to see Lava? The Big Island is the way to go. If you need to get a fix on your hotbread hankering, Molokai's your island. Other than a hundred or so minor islands, this leaves Lanai. What's Lanai good for? We weren't sure when we hopped on the ferry to head over there last Sunday; we were looking forward to finding out.

What we found was quiet relaxation in a still very Hawaiian setting. Lanai is home to only 2800 people, and most of them live in Lanai City right in the center of the island. With a soliatry paved road splitting the island in half, most everywhere we went was dirt and rocky, a good place for a Jeep.Other than some world class golf courses, and a couple really nice Four Seasons resorts, there isn't much here. It's one of the most quiet serene places I've ever been.

What's there to do on such a tranquil island? It takes a little bit of creativity to occupy time over here, especially if golf is far from appealing. Once we set up camp Beth and I started out down a sometimes dusty, sometimes muddy road to a beach on the windward side of the island. We were the only ones in sight on a beach miles long. It was overcast and windy, swimming was out of the question. So, obviously we had to take this opportunity to play some beach word scramble. It's an easy game. Beth picked a spot, and I did the same. We chose a five letter word and wrote it scrambled in the sand. The first to figure out the other person's word wins. I won with the word BACON.

The rest of the weekend we found all kinds of things to do to fill our time. We headed down to shipwreck beach to see why it had such a name. We took some time to throw ourselves over a sanddune and throw some disc. Mostly we just took in the solitude and enjoyed a couple days away from our tough life on Maui.

Camping was fun, and believe it or not, I've failed to take Beth out camping very often, so it was a long time coming. There's nothing like tuna mac & cheese on a camp stove. When night came early, we headed up to the Four Seasons and took advantage of the bar games. Darts and shuffleboard were the names of the games, and as hard as I tryed I couldn't win over Beth's lucky, I mean skillful, hand at darts. We also checked out a couple rooms at the five star resort; not a bad setup for sure. We were more than content with our fabric castle.

Two days passed, and after we took care of a lost gas cap (not the first one I've lost since we've lived here) we headed back to the ferry and headed home.

-well alright-

I hate tuna, but I love camping. And with as much as I love word games, I'd have kicked your butt in that sand word scramble :) Hey, if you were at the Four Seasons, you should have taken her to the SPA!! hahaha. Cool though, it looks like you guys had a great time!

As long as I win, that's all I need. Hey, I just read your comment on the Jensen Boys Post. I'd say you probably did have the best opportunity to get a closr inspection.

Hahahaha, good one Christy, I just read your Jensen post too. You're too funny...you little tart. No wonder Hannah always made you change your "too short" shorts at Doe River all the time...hahaha!

I'm with you John, it's all about the winning. Especially if you can rub it in.
